Nicola Edwards

Head of Serious Injuries

Nicola qualified as a Solicitor in 2003 and has experience in personal injury law.  After attending the University of Wolverhampton and Nottingham Law School she returned to Cardiff to be close to family and friends.

Nicola joined NewLaw Solicitors in 2010 and is an accredited Senior Litigator with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL).

Nicola currently manages a team of Solicitors and case assistants providing advice and support on their cases.  Her time is split managing her team and working on serious orthopaedic injury cases.  Her work involves amputation cases, non-union fractures claims and injuries requiring joint replacements.  

In her limited free time Nicola spends it with her husband and two young children.  Having two boys she spends time playing football, rugby and refereeing their games. She enjoys foreign holidays and has spent time travelling around New Zealand.

Hilton joined NewLaw in 2009 and is head of the spinal cord injuries unit  Hilton also deals with cases involving complex multiple fractures, amputations, brachial plexus injury, chronic pain and fatalities where the compensation exceed £500,000.00

Hilton qualified as a solicitor in 1991 and is accredited by being a member of the Personal Injury Panel of the Law Society. He is also Senior Litigator of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers.  Hilton is also a trained mediator.

He lives in the West Country with his wife, two sons and a daughter and when time permits is a keen sportsman and allotment gardener. He has recently completed his advance driving course.

Mark is a Solicitor (1997 qualification), a Senior Litigator of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL) and a dual qualified Mediator. He has been dealing with PI claims for claimants since 1984.

Mark’s expertise is in claims involving multiple fractures; Complex Regional Pain Syndrome and cases where there is a substantial psychological impact on the claimant, together with fatal accident claims. He has wide experience of all types of claim especially Stress and Harassment claims, including an award of £200,000 for a client for a “first breakdown” stress claim.

Outside work, Mark is a keen hockey player, having, in his younger (and fitter) years played for Cheltenham Hockey Club when they were in the National League in the 1990’s. He is also a qualified Coach (Level2) and Umpire (Level1). He also is an avid skier, reader (on his long commutes) and a gardener. He enjoys travelling abroad on holidays both in Europe and further afield. He has a wife and two children. He has, for some years been writing a Fantasy Novel which he hopes, one day, to get published.

Nigel joined NewLaw in November 2009. He has over 25 years’ experience of a broad spectrum of Personal Injury claims including those concerning acquired brain injury and catastrophic spinal injury.

Nigel is based in Kent for 3 days a week and in the Cardiff office for 2 days.

He has been noted in Legal 500 as well as the SIA and Headway Directories. He has also acted for clients in the Southall and Ladbroke Grove Rail Inquiries. He settled one of the last successful multi party actions when almost a thousand applicants received compensation. He is a Fellow of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL).

Outside work, after family life and his children, his passion is in old motor cars having both rallied, raced and also generally hung around remote places in Wales, Scotland and England spectating on or marshalling rallies, or freezing/boiling on former disused airfields watching very expensive motor cars being thrashed.

Recently he has taken up cycling and completed a charity ride from London to Paris; currently the novelty of modern cycling and its intricate technicalities is threatening his interest in cars.

Since qualifying as a solicitor in 1994 her work as a personal injury solicitor has covered a wide range of complex legal issues and injuries. Liz joined NewLaw in 2008 and has worked in the Serious Injury Team predominately representing injured motorcyclists. She specialises in high value complex orthopaedic injuries; amputations; internal injuries, ( e.g loss of bowel; kidney) and psychiatric injury.

Over the years Liz has developed contacts with a wide range of experts and organisations that enable her to help those injured cope with life changing injury and get the best support and opinion on their injuries and what they need over their lifetime to get back to a meaningful life.

Liz is an accredited senior litigator with the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL), and is also Head of Development of the Serious Injury Team.

Outside work Liz is a taxi service and PA to her 2 kids! She enjoys spending time with family and friends, (mainly eating and drinking), and walking the family dog. Recently she has rediscovered playing tennis and joined a choir to further exercise her vocal chords. Many would say no further exercise is required!

Lisa qualified as a solicitor in 1996, and has dealt with personal injury claims for 18 years. She is an APIL senior litigator.

Lisa has extensive experience in dealing with high value, catastrophic personal injury claims to include brain and spinal injuries, amputations and multiple fractures.  She has a particular interest in amputation and spinal injury claims and regularly acts on behalf of amputees and spinal cord injured individuals, having specialist knowledge of the challenges faced by those who have undergone life changing injuries particularly in relation to prosthetics, specialist equipment and care and accommodation issues. She works with leading experts/case managers within these respective fields on a regular basis so has developed a network of relationships that can provide the best possible support from all angles (medical, emotional, practical and legal) to the client during the process of the claim.

Outside of work, Lisa spends most of her time looking after her family but her interests include horse riding, walking, watching rugby and eating out with friends.

Richard joined NewLaw in November 2012 and works from NewLaw’s Bristol office as part of its growing team of serious injury lawyers based in the city.

He has over 20 years experience of acting for claimants who have suffered serious orthopaedic and brain injuries. Richard regularly acts for families in fatal accident claims.

Richard enjoys time with his wife and their wayward West Highland terrier, as well as spending time fishing on the river bank.

Julie Sutton is an Accredited Counsellor with the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP) and is a Fellow of the Institute of Welfare (IOW).  She has gained extensive experience in supporting individuals who have been affected by trauma, bereavement, personal injury and mental health issues. 

Julie said, “Every day is different and every case is different with its own complexities. Looking at client’s needs from an emotional perspective to assisting clients at their most vulnerable time is humbling and rewarding.”

Julie provides support to our clients all over England and Wales with experience of brain injury and orthopaedic injuries, supporting families in their times of need, especially in the case of fatal road accidents.

The support offered by Julie is an integral part of the our client care and she ensures that the solicitors have regular welfare support updates to ensure the client’s needs are being met.

Julie’s primary aim is to help our client’s regain independence and resume control over their lives.

In her spare time, Julie enjoys the theatre, swimming and learning classical guitar (badly!).

Mike Tonkin is a registered Social Worker with the Care Council of Wales, has extensive experience in assessment, case management and supporting individuals with physical disability, spinal cord injury and brain injury.

Mike said, “I enjoy assisting those who need support and helping them regain independence and bring dignity back in their lives. We don’t work 9-5 as we want to offer a service that’s flexible to our client’s needs, wherever they are.”

Mike provides support to our clients all over England and Wales with experience of brain injury and orthopaedic injuries, supporting families in their times of need, especially in the case of fatal road accidents.
