Cosmetic Surgery Claims

What is cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery?
Plastic Surgery is the process of reconstructing or repairing parts of the body by the transfer of tissue, either involving the treatment of injury or for cosmetic reasons.

Cosmetic Surgery, also called plastic surgery, is much more affordable today and plenty of us want to change the appearance of our faces and bodies. A nose job, thigh lift, liposuction, breast augmentation are all very popular plastic surgery procedures that take place every day and can end up having a devastating affect if they don’t turn out the way they should.

We hear of many cases where cosmetic surgery has gone wrong and it was not what was hoped for. In extreme cases people have died following plastic surgery.

When surgery goes wrong it can:

  • be botched up surgery
  • leave bad scarring
  • unwanted appearance

The surgery can leave the person with significant scarring or internal damage that cannot be repaired, leading to life-long consequences in some cases.

Cosmetic surgery can be performed by any medical doctor. It would be best to find a qualified plastic surgeon who is experienced in performing the surgery concerned on you or your loved one.

Plastic surgeons should advise patients before surgery is accepted of any dangers and pitfalls, such as, being a heavy smoker and the affects it can have on your cosmetic surgery, the healing process involved, and the final outcome of your surgery.

There are many reasons why cosmetic surgery is now popular amongst a growing number of people who want the right body to accept their physical appearance, or to make them feel better about themselves.

In 2013 BAAPS (British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons) recorded a 41% rise in liposuction procedures. Popular surgical operations include 'boob jobs', also known as breast augmentation. Overall there has been a rise on all cosmetic surgery procedures.

Examples of cosmetic surgery include:

  • tummy tucks
  • gastric band surgery
  • face and neck lift
  • breast reduction or enlargement
  • rhinoplasty, also known as nose jobs
  • ear correction
  • brow lifts
  • laser skin surgery (or resurfacing)

When surgery is performed it can be a daunting experience as you try to fulfil your emotional and physical needs. Sometimes surgery can go well and the patient is satisfied with the agreed outcome.

Unfortunately, there are times when doctors and nurses, whether they work for the NHS or a private clinic, can make mistakes. These can include leaving instruments in body parts, working on the wrong side of the body or area, or failing to notice problems developing and not treating them in time. These are just a few examples of negligence by medical professionals.

How can claiming for compensation help me?
If the surgery does not turn out the way it should have, then you may be entitled to compensation. You can recover compensation for your pain and suffering and also to cover the costs of having the treatment rectified by another surgeon, as well as any other expenses or losses that you have incurred as a result of the negligent surgery. This can include loss or earnings, paying for someone to care for you, adaptations to your home, and in some cases counselling.

There is a set amount of time that you need to bring your claim forward to any specialist clinical or medical negligence solicitor. To read more, click here
