"Due to the nature of my case, I didn’t really want to discuss the details of my case with any more people.'My family supported me in bringing a case, but I was very nervous coming in to see Darren.

'When I did come in however, he put me at ease straight away and understood how I was feeling and was very patient with me and explained everything so well to me. He dealt with my case so quickly within 6 months it was all over and I got my compensation. This money has now enabled me to get driving lessons & buy a car to hopefully help me get my confidence back. I am so grateful to Darren for helping me with my case and making me feel so at ease throughout the whole process."

We fully appreciate that abuse or sexual assault can significantly affect a person in various ways, physically and/or psychologically and can have an impact on daily living. At NewLaw we help people affected by this traumatic crime through:

  • working with you every step of the way & treating everything in complete confidence
  • offering you the support of our Welfare Managers, who are not solicitors
  • getting you help with rehabilitation services
  • seeking longer term support services, such as counselling
People who have been affected by sexual assault and abuse are usually asked many difficult and upsetting questions time and again. At NewLaw, we are mindful of the impact of recalling such an experience can have on someone. We will ensure that any initial discussions we have are minimised, and the information is taken at the pace that our client wants to give it. Abuse or sexual assault can affect anyone from children to the elderly, the vulnerable, men or women.

Our solicitors have the experience of working with complex cases and liaising with authorities, such as:

  • the police service
  • medical practitioners
  • victim support

We will do this in a confidential manner and with your consent throughout your claim.

Abuse/Rape/Sexual assault
In January 2013, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Home Office released its first ever joint Official Statistics Bulletin on sexual violence, entitled An Overview of Sexual Offending in England and Wales.

It reported that:

  • approximately 85,000 women are raped on average in England and Wales every year
  • over 400,000 women are sexually assaulted each year
  • 1 in 5 women (aged 16 - 59) have experienced some form of sexual violence since the age of 16
  • there is little statistical history on male rape

Also the Stern Review set a new benchmark for discussions of rape and sexual assault by describing victims in gender-neutral language.

Male rape was only recognised by English and Welsh law in 1994, and as a result there is little statistical history availble with what information there is varying wildly. According to the Stern Review, the victim is male in around 8% of all recorded rape cases. The unrecorded figure is thought to be far higher.

UK charity Mankind suggests that three in 20 men are victims of sexual violence, a figure that corresponds with statistics from the United States. Neither takes into account instances of rape within prisons.

There is nothing we here at NewLaw solicitors can do to change these horrifying statistics. However, we can help guide you through a claim for compensation if your life has been affected by sexual assault/rape or abuse.
