Doctor talks of Schumacher's serious injury rehabilitation
09/03/2010
The doctor who treated Michael Schumacher after he sustained a serious neck injury in a motorbike crash has been talking about the process of getting the racing driver fit to return to the track.
In an interview with the Guardian, Dr Johannes Peil explained that the Formula One driver has had to undergo an extensive recovery programme, which included physiotherapy, exercise and a diet plan.
According to Dr Peil, anyone who has to work through serious injury rehabilitation should try and include as many different activities in their exercise and physiotherapy programme as possible.
"The point is not to get bored and to have as much variety as possible," he told the newspaper.
Among the exercises being carried out by Schumacher are extreme cycling and wall climbing, which Dr Peil described as "the best possible training for under the arms and hands".
The former world champion is due to make his comeback to the Formula One circuit at the Bahrain Grand Prix this weekend (March 14th).
