Biker safety day aims to cut motorcycle crash injury rates
11/03/2010
An awareness day for motorcyclists in Oxfordshire proved a hit among local bikers, with hundreds turning out at the H Cafe in Berinsfield for the event.
Organisers hope to reduce the motorcycle crash injury rate in the region by making bikers aware of the dangers they face on the roads.
Thames Valley Police arranged the event in conjunction with Oxfordshire County Council.
According to the local force, first-time riders and bikers getting back in the saddle after time away from motorcycles are the most at risk of being killed or sustaining serious injuries on the roads.
PC Steve Jenkins told the Oxford Mail that the safety days are an important way to reach out to members of the motorcycling community.
"The majority of bikers are responsible road users. It is just one or two who spoil it and it is those we are trying to reach," he explained.
Commenting on the event in the Witney Gazette, Jim White, manager of Abbey Motorcycle Instructors at Culham, said that it is good for experienced riders to be reminded of the hazards and to make sure that they do not get complacent.
