Occupational Illness

Dermatitis

Dermatitis (also known as eczema) is the skin’s way of reacting to irritating substances at work that comes in direct contact with the skin. This reaction can be short or long term but can be extremely painful and debilitating. The hands and arms are particularly affected because they have frequent contact with irritants at work.  Dermatitis is a common condition and often, people put up with the irritation without realizing that it could be caused by something they have been exposed to.

Typical irritating substances include:

  • metalworking fluids
  • cement, plaster or concrete
  • rubber processing chemicals
  • biocides, anti-bacterials, preservatives or disinfectants.

Your employer has a duty to protect you against exposure to irritants that may cause dermatitis.  If you are suffering from any skin compliant – and you think it may be caused by your work, you should consult your doctor and call us for advice on your legal rights.
