A West Country man has reached an out-of-court settlement after losing an eye in a shoot, and will receive damages in six figures. The man, Mr C, was taking part in a game shoot in December 2005 when another gun moved out of the line and accidentally shot him while following the flight of a bird.
Mr C is an engineer and there were fears that his injury might jeopardize his ability to do his job. This factor was taken into account when calculating the damages. The damages have been paid by the defendant’s insurers, though liability has not been admitted.
Mr C’s legal case has been managed by personal injury specialists Sue Williams and Lisa Samuel of Cardiff-based law firm NewLaw.
‘This has been a tragedy for my client, of course, and has meant an end to his shooting after many years enjoying the sport,’ says Lisa. ‘It might also have cost him his career, though fortunately he has been able to continue working as an engineer.
He fully accepts the dangers of his sport, but of course the strict discipline which is usually maintained at a shoot catastrophically came unstuck on this occasion. He bears no ill will to his fellow guns.’
