An Andover man has been awarded £140,000 in damages after being knocked off his motorbike and seriously injured whilst travelling through London.
On 9 June 2006 Alan Flockton, 51, was following his occupation as motorcycle courier and riding along the Newington Causeway towards Borough Road in Southwark.
He approached a set of traffic lights which were green. As he began to cross the junction a car travelling in the opposite direction turned right across his path and struck him.
Mr Flockton was taken by ambulance to King’s College hospital, where he was diagnosed with fractures to the shoulder blade, hand and finger and two fractures to his right leg.
The next day he underwent seven hours of surgery, and remained in hospital for almost two weeks.
But at home his injuries failed to heal quickly and he was in constant pain, undergoing a series of further operations for almost the next two years.
As a result he began to develop a an anxiety-depressive illness and was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress syndrome.
Mr Flockton’s legal case against the car driver responsible for the accident was being managed by Hilton Obery, a specialist personal injury lawyer with Cardiff-based NewLaw.
Hilton Obery arranged for a rehabilitation company to manage Mr Flockton’s recovery and gradually his condition has improved, though he still uses sticks and sometimes a wheelchair.
Meanwhile Hilton Obery obtained an admission of liability from the car driver’s employers, Barclays Bank, and negotiated a settlement of £140,000 for his injuries.
‘Alan’s injuries were caused by a split second’s carelessness by the car driver, yet that momentary lapse in concentration has meant two years of near-agony for Alan and has changed his life utterly.
‘We’re pleased with the settlement we’ve agreed, but of course the money can never make up for the destruction of so much of Alan’s life and career.
‘The good news is that he is beginning to make a recovery, but it will be a slow process and he will never return to full health and be able to do the things he used to in his old life.’
