Portsmouth survival expert wins £82,000 after bike hit in U-turn

A Portsmouth sea survival expert has been awarded £82,000 in an out-of-court settlement after his motorbike was hit as a motorist attempted a U-turn.

Malcolm "Tiny" Goodger was riding his Suzuki Bandit along the Havant Road in Portsmouth in February 2007 outside a slow-moving queue of traffic. A Mercedes car pulled out of the traffic flow, attempting a U-turn, and collided with the bike. Mr Goodger suffered back and ankle injuries.

Initially the motorist's insurers denied liability, but offered £5,000 and then £20,000. However, once legal proceedings were issued they admitted liability in full, and the final settlement was for £82,000.

Mr Goodger was a sea survival instructor with the Warash Maritime Academy, part of Southampton Solent University. He had previously spent 23 years in the Royal Navy.

Mr Goodger's legal claim was managed by Liz Phipps, a lawyer specializing in personal injury with Cardiff-based NewLaw.

"Malcolm is mad on biking and absolutely full of life," says Liz Phipps. "He had previous problems with the areas he injured in the accident, so the accident has only exacerbated them. Unfortunately that means he has had to bring forward his retirement from the job he loved by a couple of years. But we have achieved a good settlement in the circumstances and I know he is looking forward to enjoying the rest of his life."

In a statement, Mr Goodger added: "At the time of the accident it felt like the end of my life. But after three years' hard work by my lawyers the result doesn't take away the pain but at least helps with my future and my family's future."
