Mother electrocuted at home, jury delivers verdict of Unlawful Killing

A jury has delivered a verdict of Unlawful Killing after a seven day inquest into the death of 22 year old Emma Shaw who died after being electrocuted by faulty wiring in her home.  The jury found that Staffordshire based Anchor Electrical and Building contractors had allowed a screw to penetrate a cable which exposed Emma to the fatal accident.

NewLaw Solicitors was instructed by the father and estate of Ms Shaw who died on 14 December 2007.  NewLaw was instructed to bring a claim for dependency on behalf of Brayden her little boy (aged 1 at the time) who is now being brought up by his father.

Emma was clearing up a spillage of water on the floor of a cupboard which housed the hot water boiler when she was electrocuted.  If the wiring had been examined correctly by Staffordshire-based Anchor Electrical and building Services the problem would have highlighted.  It was also stated in court that some readings had been fabricated

West Midlands Police had previously charged individual electrical contractors with manslaughter but dropped the charges after some three years as they believed they could not satisfy a jury as to which individual was actually responsible.

After a seven day Inquest before a jury at Sandwell Coroners Court a verdict of Unlawful Killing was returned.

The family is delighted with the verdict and the CPS may look at re-opening the criminal charges in the light of this. NewLaw’s Ian Kinnear who is acting for the family, said ‘We are delighted with the verdict.  We will now be able to proceed with our claim for compensation for the family to help them secure Brayden’s future.
